Lebanon torn to shreds because of Israel’s right to self-defense.

(Prime minister of Lebanon) Saniora said his country “has been torn to shreds,” and pointedly criticized the U.S. position that Israel acts in self-defense.

“Is this what the international community calls self-defense?”Saniora asked a meeting of foreign diplomats including U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman. “Is this the price we pay for aspiring to build our democratic institutions?”

My answer is:

  • No, that is the price you pay for being neighbour to a bully like Israel, who have received $84,854,827,200 in financial aid from the USA between 1949 and 1997. Unfortunately I could not find more up to date figures. Source: http://www.palestinemonitor.org/factsheet/US_Aid_to_Israel.htm
  • No, the USA do not care about democracy, they care about countries having Governments that are in US interests. Evidence: Saudi Arabia has not been put under pressure to become democratic by the USA. Iran however, when it changed from Shah to its democracy, the USA funded Iraq to wage war against Iran.

If someone actually used a bomber plane against an Israeli town like Israel have used against many many Lebanese towns, my worry is that if this kind of disproportionate force (that is Israel’s current way of handling with anything) continues that they might unleash its stash of nuclear weapons. But of course, if that happens George Bush will say like a puppet: “Israel has it’s right to self defense”
